Advent’s Compost Challenge

Help us grow our tree!

In the Atelier, First Graders were curious about compost. Alongside Ms. Vicky, they donned gloves and opened compost bags for a scientific investigation. They discovered some exciting things!

"You could make a whole lunch out of all this!"

"This is plastic; this can't be composted."

Ms. Vicky presented their findings at Community Share and explained why composting is important. First, composting is important because it diverts waste from landfills.

"Compost is important because it's full of nutrients! Plants need nutrients to grow taller, sprout flowers and make all the plant parts that we eat, like fruit and vegetables," she shared.

To encourage classroom composting, Advent launched a composting challenge! Students are encouraged to compost as much as possible in their classrooms in March and April. Students will weigh each bag of compost and write the weight on a paper leaf, then hang the leaf on the tree in the Family Center. Our goal is to cover this beautiful tree with leaves to see how much we've composted!
