Reflections from PoCC

Administrators and faculty from The Advent School recently attended NAISPeople of Color Conference (PoCC) in St. Louis, Missouri. Below are the reflections on the conference from Marlene Boyette, Advent's yoga and mindfulness teacher, and facilitator of Advent’s Students of Color Affinity Group.

"My experience while at PoCC this year was wonderful. I had the opportunity to be part of the hosting team for the Black/African Heritage Affinity Group, which is the largest group at the conference, with over 2,200 people gathering in affinity space each day. Within this space, I was also able to lead a grounding practice each day, which added some extra peace to the experience. The workshops that I attended provided inspiration and affirmation as well.

"While in St. Louis, I was also able to visit the Saint Louis Art Museum for 'The Culture Exhibit' and the City Museum, which I wish our students could have seen! It was such a magical experience.

"I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to attend PoCC. This conference is not exactly a 'professional development' experience. It’s more of an opportunity for people of color working within independent schools to be restored and additionally supported while in community with one another, outside of their/our respective schools."
