And the Mock Caldecott goes to…

While the world waits on the upcoming Youth Media Awards Press Conference, Advent students spent this week voting for their favorite nominated children’s picture book!

Advent Library's Mock Caldecott Award unit is a beloved tradition that inspires students to discover new books and share their perspective on what they read.

The Advent School’s Mock Caldecott Award is an annual unit during each class’ library time. Since December, students have been reading and discussing each of the18 nominated titles. They learned about the history of the Caldecott Medal and its namesake, English illustrator Randolph Caldecott, and discussed what elements of picture books could be considered during the nomination process. Students also researched and read from the Caldecott’s list of past Medal winners.

This beloved tradition is a wonderful way for students to discover new books, share ideas and perspectives, and foster a love of reading!

The Advent School’s Mock Caldecott Winner

The Yellow Bus traces the life of a school bus from ferrying kids to class to serving older adults, then becoming a home for the unhoused, animals on a farm, and even fish once it's submerged in a body of water created by a dam. It's a lovely, kid-friendly meditation on the passage of time and getting joy out of a life of purpose.
