Teaching & Learning at The Advent School

The Advent School’s challenging academic program, a motivated peer group, and the thoughtful support of our teachers inspire students to push their thinking further.

Teaching at The Advent School is purposeful, authentic, flexible, and engaging. Teachers lead students to think critically and find multiple solutions to problems. The mathematics and literacy curriculum is rooted in National Standards and promotes extensions of these standards through hands-on learning experiences as they integrate within the grade-level themes. Teachers design lessons based on students’ learning styles, interest, and readiness. Exploration and discussion are vital features of any lesson.

We believe that students learn valuable lessons by exploring issues in today’s world as well as historical times. These include, but are not limited to, environmental sustainability, humanitarian efforts, and a belief in the value of education for all. Co-teaching teams promote collaborative learning, providing opportunities for students to work together and consider their contribution to the world.

Learning at Advent goes beyond the walls of the school building. We believe in the importance of taking the students out into the field, making regular excursions to nearby parks to observe the natural world or explore Boston’s cultural and historical resources. Students become independent investigators, and both teachers and students are committed to making learning visible through documentation.
