The Advent School Philosophy

Inspired by Reggio Emilia, Shaped by Social Justice

 

The Advent School curriculum is shaped by our commitment to social justice and inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy to teaching and learning.

The curriculum for each grade level at the Advent School is built on an overarching Theme, which is a guiding principle of social justice. From “Awareness, Compassion, and Collaboration” in pre-Kindergarten to “Cultivating Local and Global Perspectives” in Second Grade to “Envisioning Empowerment” in Sixth Grade, our students are taught to be active, critical thinkers.  Children grow to see themselves as changemakers, both for our present and our future.  

Thematic Studies provide a meaningful, mission-driven context through which we teach academic skills (literacy, mathematics, history/geography, science, and the arts) and educate students to think in innovative, connected ways as problem solvers and researchers.  This integrated approach allows teachers to design and adapt projects around their students, guided by academic standards for each discipline at each grade level.

We are guided by our image of the child as competent and capable.  We believe in the importance of context to learning and that collaboration leads to both shared understanding and individual knowledge.
